The visual arts curriculum of the The Salisbury School is adapted from the Maryland Department of Education Goals and Subgoals for Fine Arts. The curriculum is based on art concepts and skills which are built upon each year. Students are expected to draw inspiration from other artists, the world around them, and their imagination. Student grades and progress are individualized so that “gifted” and students with special needs are equally challenged.

Music Department

The music curriculum of the The Salisbury School has developed from the music education philosophy of the German composer and educator, Carl Orff. The curriculum spirally builds music concepts and skills, while actively involving the students in singing, speech, rhythmic activities, movement, improvisation, and playing instruments especially designed for children. Active music learning can offer personal satisfaction to each child, contributing to his/her growth mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and socially.

The Orff approach involves imitation, exploration, and creation, as it leads to sensitive music–making. The emphasis is on process rather than performance, and on active participation by all. Because so many modes of learning are utilized, all students can gain success. Every student’s level of participation can be individualized to provide appropriate challenges for each situation (i.e “gifted” and “disabled” students are easily accommodated).

Curricular materials include a wide variety of songs and compositions from numerous cultures and time periods. This musical instruction provides unique insights into the global community. The music curriculum strives to engender a love of music by actively engaging each student in the music-making process. Each student’s level of participation can be individualized so that all students can gain a level of success.

Theatre Department

The purpose of the Theatre Arts Program is to provide students the opportunity to gain an understanding and appreciation for the art of drama. Our basic goal is to enthusiastically provide this exposure by offering a variety of interesting and stimulating activities and performance projects.
