Medicine and Math Make Lessons Fun!

Our second grade classroom was transformed into Place Value Hospital for the day as students practiced math concepts involving place value. After dressing in doctors' scrubs, the students rotated through "operating rooms" and worked together on various math challenges. Students performed "number surgery" to assist the expanded form of numbers with getting back to their standard form, matching the correct "X-Rays" (base-ten blocks) to their equivalent number, checked numbers' "symptoms" and gave a "diagnosis" for each symptom shared, and put together "prescriptions for patients" by using number comparison symbols.
