Foundational Art Skills Taught in Lower School

This week we will be featuring our awesome art department. In Pre-K 3 through 4th grade, the focus is on the exploration of art materials and processes, and exposure to art elements and principles. Projects often connect with literature being read in language arts or integrate with themes being studied across the curriculum. Self expression, collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity are celebrated. Painting, drawing, clay, construction, collage, and printmaking are each approached in a process-focused way. Students are exposed to the work of famous artists and learn to use art vocabulary to discuss their own art and the work of others. Be on the look out for more posts later this week showing how these foundational skills blossom in middle and upper school.
