Native American Studies Brought to Life

Did you know many of the Plains Indians tribes lived in teepees, but the nations of the Iroquois nation lived in longhouses? Our third graders have been learning these and many more facts while studying Native American tribes as part of their social studies unit. Students each studied different aspects of the tribes - where they lived, their clothing, their traditional foods, and the unique cultural elements of the tribe to present to their peers. To further celebrate their learning, the class enjoyed a visit from Boe Harris of the Lakota (Sioux) tribe who was able to talk about her family's history, traditions, and beliefs. A traditional Thanksgiving lunch was the perfect way to culminate their experiential learning.
